How AWH handles your information.

Last updated: October 15, 2026.

Who runs AWH

Amazing Women in History (AWH), at amazingwomeninhistory.com, is operated by Keri Lynn Engel in Connecticut, United States. This policy explains how information is handled when you visit the website, contact us, contribute an article, comment, or subscribe to the newsletter.

For privacy questions or requests, email keri@amazingwomeninhistory.com.

Contact messages and contributions

When you use the contact form or email us, we receive the details you provide, such as your name, email address and message. We use them to respond and keep a record of the correspondence.

The contributor form also collects your author biography, proposed article, title, selected categories or tags, and uploaded images. We use these to review and communicate about your submission. Published contributions can include your name, biography, links and supplied content or images. Avoid including private information in material intended for publication, and remove location information from image files if you do not want it disclosed.

Forms are handled through WPForms on the website. Submission records and correspondence may be stored in the site database, email systems and backups. Technical information, including IP address and browser details, may also be processed for delivery, troubleshooting and spam prevention. Sending a message or article is separate from signing up for the newsletter.

Comments and reply notifications

If you leave a comment, WordPress collects the name, email address, comment and any website address you supply, along with technical information such as your IP address and browser details. We use this information to display and moderate discussions and reduce spam. Your displayed name, comment, date, website link and any public avatar can be visible to other readers; your email address is not shown with your published comment.

Comments may be checked by Akismet, an Automattic anti-spam service. A hashed version of your email address may be sent to Gravatar to obtain an avatar. See Akismet’s privacy information and Automattic’s privacy policy. If you choose to receive reply notifications, your email address is used to send those messages; you can use the unsubscribe option in those emails.

Newsletter subscriptions

The AWH newsletter is hosted by Substack. When you subscribe through an embedded signup form or on Substack, Substack processes your subscription information and provides AWH with subscriber details such as your email address, name if supplied, and subscription status. We use that information to send the newsletter and manage subscriptions.

Substack also processes information about use of its service and newsletter engagement. Its independent practices are explained in Substack’s privacy policy. You can unsubscribe using the link in a newsletter email. Unsubscribing stops future newsletter delivery; it does not necessarily delete all subscription or correspondence records. Contact us if you also want to request deletion of information held by AWH.

Analytics, cookies and technical information

AWH uses Google Analytics through MonsterInsights to understand how readers find and use the website. Analytics can include pages viewed, referral sources, approximate location, browser and device information, and interactions such as link clicks, scrolling or downloads. Google processes information through its analytics technology, including cookies or similar identifiers where used. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services.

WordPress also uses cookies for functions such as remembering comment details when you choose that option, and managing login sessions for people who have site accounts. Google reCAPTCHA protects forms against abuse and processes technical and interaction information; it also uses cookies to help distinguish people from automated traffic. Google Fonts is loaded from Google servers, so your browser connects to Google when requesting those font files. These services are covered by Google’s privacy policy.

You can manage or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect features. Google also offers an Analytics opt-out browser add-on for supported browsers. This add-on does not control Substack or other services’ data collection.

Embedded content and external links

Articles and pages can contain embedded videos, audio, newsletter forms or other content supplied by third parties. Loading or interacting with an embed can send technical information to its provider, which may use cookies and associate the interaction with an account you hold there. Their privacy policies describe their own processing. Links to other websites take you to services with their own privacy practices.

Who can receive information

Information is processed by the providers used to host, deliver, maintain, back up and secure AWH; handle email and form submissions; check spam; provide analytics; and deliver the newsletter and embedded content. Relevant services are described above. Authorized people helping operate or edit AWH may access information needed for their work. Information submitted for public comments or approved contributions can be published as described above.

Information may also be disclosed where required by law, to respond to lawful requests, or to investigate abuse and protect the website or people’s rights. AWH is operated in the United States, and service providers may process information in the United States or other countries. Their locations and applicable protections vary by provider.

How long information is kept

Contact messages and contributor submissions do not currently have a fixed automatic deletion schedule. Records may remain in the site database, email archives and backups until manually removed. Comments and their associated metadata are generally retained with the discussion unless removed. Published articles and author biographies may remain in the archive.

Newsletter records are retained through Substack according to subscription status, platform settings and any deletion requests. Google Analytics retains user- and event-level data according to the property’s settings; standard aggregated reports are handled separately. See Google’s explanation of Analytics retention. Technical logs and backups have separate retention practices determined by the systems and providers involved. Contact us to ask about a particular record or request its deletion; some information may need to be retained for legal, security or recordkeeping reasons.

Your choices and privacy requests

You can unsubscribe from newsletter or comment-reply emails, adjust browser cookie settings, and contact us about information you have provided. Depending on where you live and the law that applies, you may also have rights to access or receive a copy of information, correct it, request deletion, object to or restrict certain uses, withdraw consent, or complain to a relevant privacy authority.

Send requests to keri@amazingwomeninhistory.com, describing the information or interaction concerned. We may need enough information to verify your identity and locate the relevant records. Requests involving Substack’s independent use of your data can also be directed to Substack through its privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the website or its services change. The date shown on this page will identify the latest version.
